Analyzing Smartphone Usage with People with Dementia
Objective:
In this study, we sought to investigate the frequency of the smartphone use as well as the nomophobia levels of the people with dementia.
There is a growing number of people with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and dementia using smartphones. Despite this growth, very little is known about their smartphone usage patterns and the potential effects on this population. In this survey study with 87 participants, we investigate the self-reported frequency of smartphone use and nomophobia - the fear or anxiety that arises when individuals are separated or unable to use their phones - that older adult with and without a diagnosis of MCI or dementia experience. Findings indicate that all participants, irrespective of group, had moderate to high nomophobia levels and frequencies of smartphone use. Additionally, participants with a diagnosis of MCI or dementia had significantly higher nomophobia levels. These findings provide empirical evidence of the reliance on smartphones that people with age-related cognitive changes experience, as well as contribute new directions in mobile computing surrounding smartphone use by people with age-related cognitive changes.
